A Frame.io alternative for video: KitSlate or Frame.io?
Frame.io is Adobe's cloud platform for uploading creative files, reviewing them with frame-accurate comments, sharing them through branded links and managing the work around them. Its plans are Free, Pro, Team and Enterprise (Select and Prime).
KitSlate’s Media Center sends up to 1 TB per transfer, plays the clips for the person you send to, takes their notes at a timecode and keeps the transfer beside the job’s quotes, call sheets and invoices. Frame.io’s side of the table is from its own pages, read on 3 November 2026. “Not stated” means their pages do not say.
KitSlate and Frame.io
Where Frame.io leadsFrame.io is built for review, and it leads there: frame-accurate, range-based and anchored comments with drawing tools, internal comments, version stacks and a side-by-side comparison viewer, with notes that sync as markers into Premiere and Final Cut Pro and export for Resolve and Media Composer. Camera to Cloud uploads straight from cameras and recorders by Atomos, Canon, Fujifilm, Leica, Nikon, Panasonic, RED, Sound Devices, Teradek and Zoom, on every plan including Free. It has a native Premiere panel, After Effects and Lightroom connections, free iPhone, iPad and Apple TV apps with HDR playback, the Frame.io Drive and Transfer desktop apps that resume interrupted transfers and verify by checksum, Mounted Storage to work from cloud media inside editing apps, automatic transcripts in 27 languages, a public API with SDKs and webhooks, and published SOC 2 Type 2, TPN Gold Shield and ISO 27001, with SSO, forensic watermarking and DRM on Enterprise.
Where KitSlate leadsAnyone with the link watches on a phone’s browser as well as a computer’s, and can start while the files are still uploading. Every audio track of a clip plays and can be chosen; Frame.io’s help says only the first track is used. Several cameras of a take play in sync with the sound recorder, lined up by timecode, by sound or by the slate clap, and the selects a client picks from the transcript come back as an EDL. Clean speech takes out room tone and hum, and a part of a clip downloads by its in and out points. The same account keeps the job’s quotes, call sheets, invoices and releases.

| Largest transfer | Per transfer: 5 GB on the free profile, 500 GB on Solo, 1 TB on Studio and above, up to 500 files. The free profile sends up to 50 GB a day. | Their upload article says you can upload and share assets up to 5 TB in size; their Frame.io Drive install article gives a maximum upload or download size of 8.5 PB. The web app takes up to 500 assets and 250 folders at once, 10 folders deep; the Transfer app avoids those limits. No per-plan file size is stated; total storage is the per-plan limit.You can upload and share assets up to 5TB in size.Uploading your media, FAQ |
| Storage | Your live links share your storage: 25 GB on the free profile, 500 GB on Solo, 1 TB on Studio, 4 TB on Production House, 10 TB on Enterprise. | Free 2 GB. Pro 2 TB plus 2 TB for each added member (up to 5 members, so 10 TB). Team 3 TB plus 2 TB for each added member (up to 15). Enterprise custom. Separate Mounted Storage for streaming through Frame.io Drive: 2 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB, 2 TB. Paid plans can buy storage add-ons in 250 GB steps; the add-on price is not stated on the pages read. |
| Link before the upload ends | Yes. The link exists the moment the upload starts, so you can share it while the files are still on their way; their page shows what has arrived and fills in the rest as it comes. | Whether a recipient can watch or download before the upload finishes: Not stated. Camera to Cloud devices can upload during capture (the ZOOM F10max uploads each take as it records). Their upload article says scrubs and thumbnails are made once the upload is complete. |
| Uploads from clients | No. Recipients can write back to you on the page; they cannot send files to you. | An upload page or file request for people outside your account: Not stated in the current help centre. People you invite into a project as Members (paid seats) or Guests (free, one project, on some Free and Pro accounts) can upload; Reviewers on a share link view, comment and download. |
| Speed | ||
| Transfer engine | In the browser over HTTPS, with nothing to install. Each file goes up in parts over as many as 32 parallel connections, set by a speed test before you send; an interrupted upload carries on from the last part saved, and downloads resume too. No accelerated UDP protocol. KitSlate Desktop sends by the same route at the same speed; what it adds is that a transfer finishes when you are not there. | Frame.io calls its browser uploader an accelerated file uploader; no protocol is named. The Frame.io Drive and Transfer desktop apps resume interrupted transfers, verify files by checksum and keep logs. The Drive install article adds that about 2 to 3 minutes without a connection will cause uploads to fail. Camera to Cloud devices upload over their own Wi-Fi or network link.Built-in resilience means interrupted transfers recover on their own.Transfer app page |
| What the sender uses | A browser, with nothing to install. KitSlate Desktop, free, for Macs (Apple silicon and Intel) and 64-bit Windows, sends by the same route and keeps going with the window closed, through sleep and after a restart. No Linux or mobile app. | Web app in current Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge; Frame.io Drive (macOS 13+, Windows 10+) and the older Transfer app for Mac and Windows; a Mac menu-bar uploader; free iPhone and iPad apps (iOS 17+) and an Apple TV app (tvOS 17). Their help says there is no Android app, and that share links do not work in mobile browsers. Panels for Premiere and After Effects; Lightroom and Final Cut Pro connections.We do not currently have an Android AppAndroid App article |
| Speed, as published | Measured on a real send from our office in Manhattan, on a 2 Gbps fiber connection: 29.8 GB of camera files up in 1 min 47 s at 2.23 Gbps (278 MB/s) over 14 connections, read from the laptop’s own drive, and 2.04 Gbps back down. From an external RAID the same line went up at 1.57 Gbps: the drive was the limit, not the upload. That is 100 GB in about 6 min, 1 TB in about 1 h 6 min (measured 15 October 2026). A speed test on the Send page, and on kitslate.app/transfers, measures your own line before you send. | Their upload article says the accelerated uploader allows speeds up to 5 times faster than the top file-sharing services; the Transfer page says speeds rival the fastest transfer services; the Enterprise page cites 3x faster file uploads. A speed test or measured MB/s figure for their own uploader: Not stated.speeds up to 5 times faster than the top file-sharing servicesUploading your media |
| Watching and review | ||
| Plays in the browser | H.264 video and sound play on the page. Camera files play too, MXF included: from the proxy the camera recorded, or from a preview KitSlate makes on paid plans, within the plan's monthly preview minutes. The download is the untouched master. ProRes and DNxHR .mov files show their specs and download; most browsers play only their sound. | Files play in the browser from MP4 proxies, with the original kept for download. Their validated list includes MOV (H.264, H.265, ProRes), MP4, MKV, AVI, MXF ProRes, MXF DNxHD and MXF JPEG2000, plus camera RAW stills, PSD, AI, PDF, Office, InDesign and 3D. R3D, BRAW and ProRes RAW video are not on the list; they say unlisted types may still play but are not validated. 4K playback on Pro and above; 1080p on Free; HDR on Apple devices. |
| Playback size for a slow connection | A preview KitSlate makes has Quality in the player: Auto plays the full size and steps down when the picture keeps stopping to load (and starts smaller in data-saver mode or on a 3G connection), or choose 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p, and the choice is kept in that browser. In multi-camera the cameras you aren't hearing play a smaller size, so a slow connection keeps up. A camera's own proxy is one file at one size. Downloads are always the original. | Choose playback quality from the gear menu; proxies are made at 2160p, 1080p, 720p, 540p and 360p. What is offered depends on the source and your plan: 4K on Pro and above, 1080p on Free. The iOS and Apple TV apps also let you set resolution. |
| Spec sheet | A spec sheet read from the file itself: Picture (codec, bit depth, frame rate), Sound (tracks and their names, sample rate) and Source (start timecode, camera, scene and take). | 33 built-in metadata fields, including Video Codec, Audio Codec, Frame Rate, Bit Rate, Bit Depth, Color Space, Dynamic Range, Resolution, Sample Rate, Channels, Start Time, Duration and Alpha Channel, shown on asset cards and in Properties, plus custom fields. (Their getting-started article says 32.) |
| Comments at a timecode | Pause and write: the note carries the clip's source timecode and opens the clip at that frame; you answer on the same thread. Notes sit as markers on the scrubber, and J, K and L play backwards, pause and speed up, on every plan. Frame step, an A-B loop, snapshots and the timecode display are on paid plans; a recipient whose own KitSlate plan is paid gets them by signing in on the page. | Frame-accurate single-frame, range-based and anchored comments with drawing tools, @mentions, hashtags and attachments (Pro and above, up to 6 a comment); internal comments hidden from reviewers (Team and above); a Needs Review, In Progress, Approved status; version stacks and a side-by-side comparison viewer; comments printed or exported. Reviewers comment without an account. |
| Download part of a clip | Set an in and an out and download that part: WAV, MP4 and MOV in their original quality (a long-GOP clip starts on the keyframe at or before the in point), and any previewed file as a compressed MP4. On paid plans. | Downloading part of a clip by in and out points: Not stated. You can download the original, a lower resolution proxy, or a single frame with Download Still. The Transfer app can download the files named in an EDL or XML. |
| Transcripts | A transcript of each audio and video file, every line with the clip's own timecode: the words light up as it plays, a press on a line goes there, and it is searchable. Select a few words to trim to exactly that part, or attach them to a comment. Download it as text with or without timecodes, or as SRT or VTT subtitles. Made automatically by Workers AI (whisper-large-v3-turbo), with no speaker labels, so check it before you quote it. Online it is off until the sender switches it on, on paid plans. In KitSlate Desktop it is made on your computer: the free plan can try it, and paid plans make them without limit, with no minutes counted. | Automatic transcripts and captions for video and audio in 27 languages, on every plan including Free, with optional speaker labels (not for users in Texas or Illinois), editing, search, bulk transcription and SRT, VTT or TXT export. You can also upload your own SRT or VTT captions. Reviewers on a share see transcripts only if already made. |
| Multi-camera and selects | ||
| Multi-camera, in sync | Clips from different cameras whose timecode overlaps become a take, the sound recorder's WAV or MP3 placed by its own timecode. Cameras that weren't jammed to one clock are lined up by listening to their sound, or by marking the slate clap clip by clip. Every camera of the take plays together, the recorder's tracks under them, in one transport; Synced by switches between timecode, sound and marked claps, and Re-sync puts every source back on the take's clock. Download Take saves the originals with an FCPXML for Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve and an XML for Premiere Pro, the multicam already lined up. With the Pro review tools. Of the services compared here, KitSlate is the only one that syncs your cameras and sound into takes on the link itself, by timecode, by sound or by a marked clap, and plays every camera together for the person you sent it to. | Several camera angles playing in sync: Not stated. Their comparison viewer shows any two assets side by side with linked zoom and playback controls. |
| Selects sent back to you | Ask for selects: the recipient highlights the sound bites in the transcript and sends them back in one message, each with its timecode in and out and its words, and you download them as an EDL. On a transfer you sent, Add to selects builds a reel of your own the same way. With the Pro review tools. | Comments sync as timeline markers in the Premiere panel and appear as markers in Final Cut Pro; comments export for Media Composer and as a Resolve EDL, CSV or text. Rating, status and custom fields (such as selects) group assets into Collections, and a share can let reviewers set a featured field such as a rating. The Transfer app downloads the files listed in an EDL, FCPXML or FCP7 XML. |
| Audio | ||
| Every audio track | On paid plans every track gets a lane with a switch, solo and a meter with peak hold and loudness, and the Audio menu adds Left, Right and Reverse; Stereo and Mono are on every plan. On a camera file's preview you hear a stereo mix, with every track listed. | Their conversion article says Frame.io does not support multiple audio tracks: only the first track is used, and they suggest flattening before upload. Several channels inside one track (stereo, 5.1, 7.1) all play; files with more than 8 channels do not play but still download. Their Apple TV article lists a View Audio Track option in that app's player.Frame.io does not support multiple audio tracks.What are my assets converted to, Multichannel support |
| Audio as its own file | A sound recorder's poly WAV downloads whole on every plan; on paid plans also as one track, or split into a mono WAV per track, with the mixer's track names. | Playback audio is a 128 kbps AAC stereo proxy made from the first audio track; the original file stays available to download. Camera to Cloud recorders upload their own files: WAV or AAC from Sound Devices 888 and Scorpio, WAV (BWF) from the ZOOM F10max. |
| Clean speech | Clean speech takes room tone, hiss and hum out of speech on KitSlate's own servers (DeepFilterNet, open source): pick Light, Medium or Strong, hear a minute from the playhead, then clean the whole clip to listen to it that way or download the cleaned sound, one file per track. The transcript is never made from the cleaned copy. | Not stated |
| Delivery and tracking | ||
| Download tracking | Per recipient: opened, played, downloaded, with the time and the speed. Ask that everyone opening a link confirms their email address with a six-digit code first (tracked), or that only the people you sent it to may open it, each confirming theirs (restricted); every visit and download is then recorded against the confirmed address, however the link reached them. Open a transfer you sent and you see their page with an Activity panel only you see. Emails the first time each person downloads, on every download, or never. | Each share has an activity feed with names, dates and actions (opened the link, viewed an asset, commented, downloaded), plus a last-viewed time and view count, and a Seen By field on assets. Reviewers give a name and email at their first comment. Email digests (5 minutes to daily), in-app and iOS push notifications. |
| Your branding | On paid plans the email and the download page carry your company's name, logo, email and phone, for the company you send as. No custom domain. | Custom-branded shares on Pro, Team and Enterprise: logo or icon, header and background image, description, light or dark appearance, accent colours and thumbnail style, with an account-wide default template. Not on Free. A custom domain for share pages: Not stated. |
| Integrations | None for transfers: no editing-software panels, no cloud-storage connectors and no transfer API. Recipients come from your KitSlate crew, client and company books. | Camera to Cloud from Atomos, Canon, Fujifilm, Leica, Nikon, Panasonic LUMIX, RED, Sound Devices, Teradek, Aaton, Zoom and apps such as Filmic Pro and Pomfort; Premiere, After Effects, Lightroom and Final Cut Pro; LumaFusion, Baselight, Silverstack, ShotPut, Telestream Vantage and MASV. A public API with Python and TypeScript SDKs, webhooks (beta), an MCP server (beta), Zapier, Make and Workfront Fusion. Enterprise Prime can use your own S3 bucket (Storage Connect). |
| Security, as published | TLS in transit; transfer files are held in Cloudflare R2, encrypted at rest. KitSlate does not hold a SOC 2 or ISO 27001 attestation. | SOC 2 Type 2, TPN Gold Shield and ISO 27001 (under Adobe's certification). AES-256 encryption at rest on Amazon S3 and TLS in transit; two-factor sign-in. Passphrases, link expiry and a static watermark on Pro and above. Enterprise adds SAML SSO; Enterprise Prime adds secure invite-only shares, session-based and forensic watermarking (with NAGRA) and DRM. A data processing agreement for Enterprise on request. |
| Terms and your files | ||
| What the recipient needs | A browser. No account and nothing to install; by opening the page or downloading, a recipient accepts the terms. The sender may put a password on a transfer, on any plan, and may ask that whoever opens it confirms their email address with a code first. | Share links need no sign-up and are free to send; reviewers view and comment in a browser or the free iPhone and iPad apps, giving a name and email when they first comment. Their help says share links do not work in mobile browsers. Secure (Enterprise) shares need the reviewer to sign in. The Transfer app can be used from a share link without a login.Share links do not work within mobile browsers.What browser should I use with Frame.io? |
| Who owns the files | You own the files. The licence is to store them for the period you set, stream previews to your recipients, deliver them and delete them.You own what you send.Terms §32, File transfer | Frame.io is governed by Adobe's General Terms of Use plus Frame.io Product Specific Terms, with Adobe Inc. | How long files are kept | For the period you set, 1 to 30 days (7 by default) — on the free profile up to 3 days, and a free link can’t be kept longer; then the files are deleted and cannot be recovered. Transfer files are not part of KitSlate's backups. | Content is kept for the life of the account unless a user deletes it or a lifecycle policy does. Deleted items stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days, then are gone. Enterprise can auto-delete assets after 30, 60, 90 days or a custom period. Share links can expire (Pro and above). Free accounts may be deleted after four years without activity. |
| Where files are stored | Cloudflare storage in North America (Eastern North America location hint, best effort). Choosing a region: not stated. | Hosted on Amazon Web Services. A choice of storage region: Not stated. Storage Connect (Enterprise Prime) writes originals to your own S3 bucket, which must be in us-east-1; Frame.io still keeps proxies and thumbnails. Sub-processors are listed by Adobe. |
| Scanning and AI training | Transfer files are not read, analysed or used to train anything, and they are not scanned for malware.We do not read, analyse or train anything on transfer files.Terms §32, File transfer | Adobe's General Terms say cloud content may be scanned automatically for illegal or abusive content, shared content may be reviewed for abuse, people may review content in limited cases, and content analytics can be switched off. They say Adobe will not use your content to train generative AI models, and the transcription article says transcripts are not used for training. Malware scanning of uploads: Not stated.We will not use your Local or Cloud Content to train generative AI modelsAdobe General Terms of Use, section 2.2(F) (scanning: 2.2(C)) |
| Download and fair-use limits | No download cap is stated. Transfers that exceed an allowance or break the terms may be refused, slowed or stopped. | No download or bandwidth cap is stated. Downloading two or more files, a folder, or one file over 2 GB prompts the Transfer app. On Pro and above the sender can switch downloads off for a share. Adobe's General Terms allow reasonable technical limits such as file size and storage. |
| When a plan lapses | A cancelled plan keeps its paid features to the end of the period paid for. If a downgrade leaves you over the lower plan's limits, you are told what exceeds them and given a reasonable chance to export or reduce it before anything becomes read-only (Terms §16). Transfer links you have already sent are not ended by cancellation: each keeps working until the expiry you set, and its recipients can still download; the Pro review tools on them follow your plan at the time the page is opened (Terms §32). | Cancelling takes effect at the end of the billing period and the account drops to the Free plan, so you may need to delete files to fit 2 GB. Over a plan limit you get a banner and a grace period, then the account can be locked. Their retention article says cancelling is not a request to delete. Adobe's terms ask you to move content out before a licence ends and allow deletion 30 days after termination.your account will downgrade to free plan with reduced storage and featuresHow do I cancel my subscription? |
| Price | ||
| Published price | The Media Center is on every plan, the free profile included (5 GB per transfer). Solo $19, Studio $49, Production House $149 a month; Enterprise: custom pricing. Save 20% billed annually. A plan price with its seats included (1 seat on Solo, 3 seats on Studio, 8 seats on Production House); nothing per gigabyte, and recipients never need a seat. | Free $0 (2 members, 2 GB, 2 projects). Pro $15 per member a month, or $156 per member a year (up to 5 members). Team $25 per member a month, or $264 per member a year (up to 15 members). Enterprise (Select or Prime) by quote. Annual saves 13% and renews yearly; prices are plus tax, in US dollars. |
| Beyond transfer | ||
| What else it does | The transfer is one part of KitSlate: on paid plans the same account sends quotes that become invoices, call sheets and agreements, and keeps your crew and client books and your inventory. | Beyond review and transfer: metadata and Collections, assignees and status for workflow, AI search, Mounted Storage through Frame.io Drive to work from cloud media inside editing apps, review of PDFs, Office, InDesign, HTML and 3D files, and a Workfront integration. In Labs (early access): an AI assistant and Firefly actions to reframe video, translate audio and remove image backgrounds. |
About speed. Frame.io uploads from the browser with what it calls an accelerated uploader, from its Frame.io Drive and Transfer desktop apps for Mac and Windows, from its iPhone and iPad app, and straight from Camera to Cloud devices. Over long distances an accelerated engine is built to move files faster than an ordinary upload. KitSlate is a browser with nothing to install. Measured on a real send from our office in Manhattan, on a 2 Gbps fiber connection: 29.8 GB of camera files up in 1 min 47 s at 2.23 Gbps (278 MB/s) over 14 connections, read from the laptop’s own drive, and 2.04 Gbps back down. From an external RAID the same line went up at 1.57 Gbps: the drive was the limit, not the upload. That is 100 GB in about 6 min, 1 TB in about 1 h 6 min, measured 15 October 2026.
No side-by-side measurement against an accelerated engine has been published, so this page does not claim KitSlate is faster than one. The speed test on the Send page measures your own line before you send.
