KitSlate or FileZilla for sending video files?

FileZilla is a free, open-source FTP, FTPS and SFTP client, and a free FTP and FTPS server, for Windows, macOS and Linux. FileZilla Pro adds cloud storage, a command-line client and an Enterprise Server that adds SFTP. It is a different kind of tool: it moves files between your computer and a server you already have, rather than hosting a link for a client itself.

KitSlate’s Media Center sends up to 1 TB per transfer, plays the clips for the person you send to, takes their notes at a timecode and keeps the transfer beside the job’s quotes, call sheets and invoices. FileZilla’s side of the table is from its own pages, read on 8 October 2026. “Not stated” means their pages do not say.

KitSlate and FileZilla

Where FileZilla leadsFree and open source, with no size cap stated (the client handles files over 4 GB): files go straight between your computer and your own server or cloud account, transfers resume, and it works on Windows, macOS and Linux. The free client and server cost nothing; Pro is a flat yearly licence per user, and Enterprise Server one per server with unlimited users.

Where KitSlate leadsThe person you send to needs only a link and a browser, with no login to your server. KitSlate plays the clips, takes notes at the timecode and shows who downloaded each link. FileZilla's pages describe no playback or timecode notes; Pro can make Box, OneDrive and Google Drive share links, and Enterprise Server keeps transfer logs.

Largest transferPer transfer: 5 GB on the free profile, 500 GB on Solo, 1 TB on Studio and above, up to 500 files.No size cap is stated. The free client's features page lists resume and transfer of large files over 4 GB. Pro Enterprise Server is described as able to transfer 'limitless files'.
StorageYour live links share your storage: 100 GB on the free profile, 500 GB on Solo, 2 TB on Studio, 4 TB on Production House, 10 TB on Enterprise. No storage plan is described. The client moves files between your computer and remote servers or cloud storage services you connect to, and the server products are self-hosted on a machine you provide.
Link before the upload endsYes. The link exists the moment the upload starts, so you can share it while the files are still on their way; their page shows what has arrived and fills in the rest as it comes. Not stated
Uploads from clientsNo. Recipients can write back to you on the page; they cannot send files to you.Upload link or web upload page: not stated. With FileZilla Server (FTP, FTPS) or Pro Enterprise Server (adds SFTP) you create user accounts on your own machine, and clients connect with an FTP or SFTP client. Speed
Transfer engineIn the browser over HTTPS, with nothing to install. Each file goes up in parts over as many as 32 parallel connections, set by a speed test before you send; an interrupted upload carries on from the last part saved, and downloads resume too. No accelerated UDP protocol and no desktop app.Desktop app speaking FTP, FTPS and SFTP (Pro adds WebDAV and cloud APIs). The free client lists resume, a transfer queue and speed limits. Pro's docs add resume on every protocol that supports byte ranges, queue reordering, pausing and priority, and automatic retry. Their speed guide advises 1 or 2 simultaneous transfers for very large files.

Watching and review
Plays in the browserH.264 video and sound play on the page. Camera files play too, MXF included: from the proxy the camera recorded, or from a preview KitSlate makes on paid plans, within the plan's monthly preview minutes. The download is the untouched master. ProRes and DNxHR .mov files show their specs and download; most browsers play only their sound. Not stated
Spec sheetA spec sheet read from the file itself: Picture (codec, bit depth, frame rate), Sound (tracks and their names, sample rate) and Source (start timecode, camera, scene and take). Not stated
Comments at a timecodePause and write: the note carries the clip's source timecode and opens the clip at that frame; you answer on the same thread. Notes sit as markers on the scrubber, and J, K and L play backwards, pause and speed up, on every plan. Frame step, an A-B loop, snapshots and the timecode display are on paid plans; a recipient whose own KitSlate plan is paid gets them by signing in on the page. Not stated
LUT viewLog footage shows as Rec.709 from the camera's metadata, a LUT in the clip or on the card, or a show LUT you attach; one switch shows the original. On paid plans. Not stated
Download part of a clipSet an in and an out and download that part: WAV, MP4 and MOV in their original quality (a long-GOP clip starts on the keyframe at or before the in point), and any previewed file as a compressed MP4. On paid plans. Not stated
TranscriptsA transcript of each audio and video file, every line with the clip's own timecode: the words light up as it plays, a press on a line goes there, and it is searchable. Select a few words to trim to exactly that part, or attach them to a comment. Download it as text with or without timecodes, or as SRT or VTT subtitles. Made automatically by Workers AI (whisper-large-v3-turbo), with no speaker labels, so check it before you quote it. Off until the sender switches it on; on paid plans. Not stated
Audio
Every audio trackOn paid plans every track gets a lane with a switch, solo and a meter with peak hold and loudness, and the Audio menu adds Left, Right and Reverse; Stereo and Mono are on every plan. On a camera file's preview you hear a stereo mix, with every track listed. Not stated
Audio as its own fileA sound recorder's poly WAV downloads whole on every plan; on paid plans also as one track, or split into a mono WAV per track, with the mixer's track names. Not stated

Terms and your files
What the recipient needsA browser. No account and nothing to install; by opening the page or downloading, a recipient accepts the terms. For files on your FTP or SFTP server, whoever collects them needs an FTP/SFTP client (the free FileZilla client works with the Pro Enterprise Server) and a login on your server. Pro can also create sharing links on Box and OneDrive, and Google Drive shares open to anyone; those are the cloud provider's own links. A recipient web link hosted by FileZilla: not stated.Anyone with the link can either view or edit the itemHow to Share Files with Microsoft OneDrive
Who owns the filesYou own the files. The licence is to store them for the period you set, stream previews to your recipients, deliver them and delete them. You own what you send.Terms §32, File transferYou keep your files: they go between your computer and your own server or cloud account. The project's privacy policy says neither FileZilla nor third parties have access to files. A licence over your content: not stated. The Pro terms disclaim liability for content you transmit.Neither we nor third parties have access to your credentials, filesPrivacy Policy (filezilla-project.org), Data processing in our Software
How long files are keptFor the period you set, 1 to 30 days (7 by default); then the files are deleted and cannot be recovered. Transfer files are not part of KitSlate's backups.FileZilla says it has no access to your files, which stay on the servers you choose. Pro customer data: kept up to two years after the subscription expires, ten years at most for legal defence. Website logs: no more than 10 days on the project site; on the Pro site generally no more than 30 days, extendable to one year for follow-up or support.
Where files are storedCloudflare storage in North America (Eastern North America location hint, best effort). Choosing a region: not stated.Files: not held by FileZilla, so no region applies. Pro's maker is Business Follows srl, Rome, Italy; the free project's controller is in Cologne, Germany. Region choice for any hosted data: Not stated.

Malware scanning, content moderation and AI training: Not stated. The software does check for new versions (sends version, OS and CPU type).
Download and fair-use limitsNo download cap is stated. Pro Enterprise Server: unlimited users and bandwidth. Egress fees or caps on your own host or cloud account: not stated by FileZilla.
When a plan lapsesA cancelled plan keeps its paid features to the end of the period paid for. If a downgrade leaves you over the lower plan's limits, you are told what exceeds them and given a reasonable chance to export or reduce it before anything becomes read-only (Terms §16). Transfer links you have already sent are not ended by cancellation: each keeps working until the expiry you set, and its recipients can still download; the Pro review tools on them follow your plan at the time the page is opened (Terms §32).Nothing happens to your files, as FileZilla never holds them. A Pro client keeps working, but updates and online services stop without renewal. The Enterprise Server licence expires if not renewed.

Beyond transfer

No review, asset management or storage of its own is described.

About speed. FileZilla is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, over FTP, FTPS and SFTP. KitSlate is a browser with nothing to install. Measured from our office in Manhattan on a 2 Gbps fiber connection: 1.82 Gbps up to KitSlate storage over 12 connections, 2.04 Gbps back down. That is 100 GB in about 8 min, 1 TB in about 1 h 21 min, measured 7 October 2026.

No side-by-side measurement against a desktop app has been published, so this page does not claim KitSlate is faster than one. The speed test on the Send page measures your own line before you send.
